Cartesian Plane

Cartesian Plane - was formalized by French mathematician Rene Descartes. The cartesian plane is defined by two perpendicular number lines, the x-axis and the y-axis. The x-axis is horizontal and the y-axis is vertical.

All points in the plane can be described by using an ordered pair of numbers in the form (x,y), where x defines how far to go along the x-axis. Positive numbers tell how far to go to the right, negative numbers tell how far to go to the left along the x-axis. The number in the y position of the ordered pair tells us how far to go up the y-axis if it is positive and how far to go down the y-axis if it is negative.
