Monomial

Monomial- is a product of a power of variables. The formal definition is any value formed from 1 by a finite number of multiplications by a variable. The set of all monomials is a subset of all polynomials that is closed under multiplication.

In laymen's terms, a monomial is any product of numbers and variables. The only distinction being that if a variable is raised to a power it must be a positive integer. This means no negative powers and no fraction powers, ie no square roots.
